The city of Wolkenstein began to develop as a pre-castle settlement at the end of the 12th century. Even though most of the buildings have been renewed following the numerous fires, the mediaeval city can still be recognised. Parts of the wall surrounding the city and castle, including the Mühltor built upon by another structure have been retained. Far away from through traffic, the historical city centre of Wolkenstein is peaceful and introspective.
